This week, Katie, a young leader with Kestrel Cubs, came in to teach us all about Emergency Aid.
Firstly, Katie showed us a picture of a cycling accident, where the person falling off their bike had banged their head and we talked about what actions we should take.
We also learnt when to call 999, what to expect and what to say.
We then learnt how to put an unconscious person, breathing but not responsive, into the recovery position. First, Katie and Badger demonstrated how to do it, then all the beavers all had a go.
Being extremely intelligent beavers, everyone did a great job – well done beavers!
Katie showed us another picture of a cycling accident. This time, the person had fallen off and was bleeding, so we talked about what actions we should take this time.
Each lodge then went and discussed the 6 steps of the medical checklist for blood and tried to put them in the correct order:
- If possible, tell an adult
- Put on disposable gloves, if available
- Clean the cut by rinsing it under water and pat the wound dry
- Raise and support the injured part
- Clean and dry the area around the wound
- Cover with a plaster or adhesive dressing
Being extremely intelligent beavers, every lodge did it correctly – well done beavers!
Next, we had a test of ‘Right’ or ‘Wrong’ actions in different emergency aid situations. After Katie outlined each scenario, the beavers had to have a quick discussion before voting with a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
Of course, being extremely intelligent beavers, they all did brilliantly – well done beavers, you all passed your Emergency Aid badge!
And well done Katie; thank you, you were fabulous!
Lastly, we managed to squeeze in a game of Duck, Duck, Goose!
