Sixer and Seconder Camp – Windmill and Kestrel Packs

On Saturday 28 September, the sixers and seconders from Windmill and Kestrel Cub packs set off from Swinbrook in search of the camp site at Minster Lovell.

They navigated their way using a map and compass bearings.

We found a lovely quite, but fast flowing bridge – the ideal spot for playing Pooh Sticks. Of course everyone thought their stick won!

At lunch time we stopped to eat our packed lunches and were kept amused by the cows in the next field.

On reaching the camp site the cubs put up the tents (including the leaders)

Then they set about sorting out tea. This meant lighting the altar fires and stoking the fires.

Next prepping the vegetables.

Lastly putting the food on the fire to cook.

We all enjoyed a lovely tea.

After clearing up and having a few games, we had a campfire, singing some songs and toasting marshmallows on the campfire.

We had a non-eventful night, with temperatures going down as low as 4 degrees, but everyone followed the scouting motto and was prepared! Extra blankets, layers and socks were used, in addition to the good old woolly hat!

On Sunday breakfast was cereal and juice, then bacon butties with bacon cooked on a stick and toast cooked on a stick with hot chocolate.

With everyone well fed, the cubs set about packing up camp. Personal kit was tidied away and tents were taken down.

This was a lovely camp, with the cubs very busy all the time, but we were very proud of them since we didn’t hear one person moan about the task they were given, they were all quite happy to muck in and help each other out. This was scouting at its best!
