Beavers – Necker Rolling and Diya Lamps

With Remembrance Sunday approaching and also as part of our Skills Challenge Badge, this week Karl (Chil from Kestrel Cubs and world-renowned necker roller) and Lottie (Endeavour Scout Leader) kindly came in to teach us how to tie our neckers properly. Essentially, neckers need to be clean and ironed before being rolled tightly. As can be seen in the pictures below, the beavers did a pretty good job – well done beavers!

Thanks Karl and Lottie – we really appreciate your help!

As part of our World Challenge badge, we then watched a short video about Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The video we watched and quite a lot more about Diwali can be found by clicking on this button:

We then went on to make our own Diya lamps out of some air-drying clay. Usually, Diya lamps are filled with oil and a wick but we decided that tea lights would be a little safer! If you would like to know a little more about Diya lamps and even try painting them using your fingers, please have a look at this resource (pdf file):

Here are some photos of us making the Diya lamps and a short video of our parade for the parents at the end of the session:
