Beavers – Disability Awareness

This week, we discovered what the word disability means and the wide range of things it can cover. We looked at different pieces of equipment or assistive technology that can help disabled people. We learnt that some disabilities are visible and that some may be non-visible. It varies from person to person how they view or describe their own disabilities. The beavers listened really well and we all learnt lots of new things.

Hedgehog helped us to understand how disabilities can impair us using a game of volleyball. Some of the beavers had to stay sitting on chairs, some had to cover their eyes with their neckers, some had to crouch down and stop playing when told to do so (representing sensory overload) and some were free to move around as usual. Hedgehog then made adjustments to the game to make life easier for each of the disability groups to join in the game.

We also learnt about Braille and made some Braille biscuits. Each lodge had to spell out their lodge name in Braille.

Then we got to eat our work – yummy!

We also coloured in some pictures of various different disabilities.

We also learnt and said our Goodnight Rhyme using British Sign Language (BSL).

It was a really interesting and enjoyable session.

A really big well done and thank you to Hedgehog🦔!
