This week, the beavers have been completing a part of the Skills Challenge Badge – Machine – Invent a machine and show other beavers how it works.
This is the final hurdle for three of our beavers to qualify for their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award – an amazing achievement!
The term ‘Machine’ is widely interpreted in different ways but we consider it to be ‘an object which allows us to do work with less effort than the effort required to do work without a machine’.
The beavers came up with some amazing ideas for making life easier in the home, for space travel, for bridges, for towers, for a generator, for a jack-in-the-box, for all sorts of vehicles and boats, for a beaver trap, for a leader trap and for a few things that we didn’t realise were possible, but are now! It was difficult, but after some difficulty referencing it to the movement’s core values and a lengthy discussion, we were even able to accept that a killing machine would allow a killer to kill with less effort than the effort required to kill without a machine! We just hope that this one doesn’t go into production.
