Beavers – Air Activities

This week we worked on our Air Activities badge and Pilot Paul came in to help us.

The first thing we did was learn a few facts about some different aircraft. Each lodge learnt about 2 different aircraft, one which Pilot Paul has flown and one which he hasn’t. See if you can guess which ones Pilot Paul has flown:

Red Lodge: Concorde and Wessex (helicopter)

Blue Lodge: Boeing 747 (Jumbo Jet) and Spitfire

White Lodge: Airbus A340 and The Wright Flyer

Green Lodge: Hawk and Hindenburg (airship)

We then went outside to burn off some energy and to play a game of ‘find the aircraft’.

Next, we Pilot Paul told us a bit about his career as a pilot before allowing the beavers to ask questions and to tell us all about their own flying experiences. At times, there was a little bit of confusion between being an aircraft pilot and an astronaut. Sadly, no, Pilot Paul has not walked on the moon!

Next we all learnt about the NATO phonetic alphabet and used it to spell our names.

Lastly, we all made paper aircraft and took part in a flying competition. Well done to the beavers who all made amazing aircraft, though some of them did appear to fly more like boomerangs! Pilot Paul took part in the final using his copy of a world record model aircraft and it went all the way to the back wall!

Thank you very much Pilot Paul for coming in and helping us work on our Air Activities badge.

Here are some photos and a video of us enjoying ourselves:

Pilot Paul has flown the Wessex, the Boeing 747, the Airbus 340, the Hawk and a whole host of other aircraft!
